I have decided to just pay for a course on Udemy, rather than wasting time teaching myself off online tutorials. There are lots to choose from and they are often up to 90% off full price.
I found a course that's highly reviewd and covers all the basics of Android development.

The course says to use Android Studio, so I am going to download the software. Fortunately it's free and doesn't look too complicated.
Now that I have completed the course I can finally begin developing my app. It's been a frustrating experience not being able to start making it, but I think the best decision was to complete the course first and learn everything there is to know.
The course has helped my make the basics of my app but I still need to do a lot of online tutorials to help with the more advanced and specific areas; which I was hoping I wouldn't have to do.
